WESCOPEX 2009 Show Cover

This year marks the 200th
anniversary of the birth of Abraham Lincoln..
The cover will be franked with a stamp issued earlier this year for the
200th birth anniversary and a 4-cent stamp issued in 1959 for the 150th
birth anniversary.

Flags of Our Nation Set 3 - August 6

On
August 6, 2009, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, at the David Lawrence Convention
Center during the American Philatelic Society Stamp Show, the Postal Service
iissued the 44-cent definitive stamps Flags of Our Nation, in ten designs, in a
pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) coil of 50. The stamps, designed by Howard E.
Paine of Delaplane, Virginia, go on sale nationwide August 6, 2009.
The U.S. Postal Service continues its Flags of Our Nation series with ten
more stamp designs. These stamps feature the states of Kentucky through Missouri
plus one with the Stars and Stripes over the amber waves of grain. Artist Tom
Engeman, Bethany Beach, Delaware, created the highly detailed flag portraits on
the stamps, reproducing as accurately as possible such complex elements as
intricate state seals and coats of arms. First day address:

TV Memories - August 11
On
August 11, 2009, in North Hollywood, California, the
Postal
Service issued the 44-cent, Early TV Memories commemorative stamps in 20 designs
in a pressure sensitive (PSA) pane of 20 stamps and a booklet of 20 premium
stamped postal cards. The stamps, designed by Carl T. Herrman of North Las
Vegas, Nevada, go on sale nationwide August 11, 2009.
With these stamps, the U.S. Postal Service commemorates 20 great shows
from TV’s golden age. For more than half a century, Americans have turned to
television for entertainment and information. Whether laughing at the first
situation comedies, tingling at crime dramas, or identifying with ordinary
people who had their day in the spotlight on game shows, audiences were charmed

Hawai’i Statehood - August 21

On August
21, 2009, in Honolulu, Hawai’i, the Postal Service issued a 44-cent, Hawai’i
Statehood commemorative stamp in one design in a pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA)
pane of 20 stamps. The stamp, designed by Phil Jordan of Falls Church, Virginia,
will go on sale nationwide August 21, 2009. The U.S. Postal Service commemorates
the 50th anniversary of Hawaii’s statehood with the release of this stamp.
Artist and historian Herb Kawainui Kane of Captain Cook, Hawaii, who has
dedicated much of his life to studying Hawaiian culture and history, created the
painting on the stamp. In the art, a surfer rides a wave on a longboard, a
popular choice among surfers for centuries. Next to him, two people paddle an
outrigger canoe to shore. First day address:

September 3, 2009, in Washington, DC, the Postal Service issued a 44-cent, Eid
special stamp in one design in a pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) pane of 20.
Designed and calligraphed by Mohamed Zakariya of Arlington, Virginia, the stamp
goes on sale nationwide September 3, 2009.
This stamp was first issued in 2001 with a 34-cent denomination, and with
the same design, a 37-cent denomination in 2002, 39-cent denomination in 2006,
41-cent denomination in 2007, and 42-cent denomination in 2008.

Thanksgiving Day Parade – Sept. 9

On September 9, 2009, in New York,
New York, the Postal Service issued a 44-cent, Thanksgiving Day
Parade
commemorative stamp in four designs in a pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) pane
of 20 stamps. Designed by Howard E. Paine of Delaplane, Virginia, the stamps go
on sale nationwide September 9, 2009. The
four stamps feature iconic scenes of a Thanksgiving Day Parade, including a
lively marching band, large balloons of favorite animals and popular characters,
and crowds of delighted onlookers. Drawing on the long and rich visual history
of Thanksgiving Day parades in the U.S., artist Paul Rogers of Pasadena,
California, based his design on American advertising and poster art from the

Gary Cooper - September 10

On
September 10, 2009, in Los Angeles, California, the Postal Service issued a
44-cent, Gary Cooper
commemorative
stamp in one design in a pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) pane of 20 stamps.
The stamp, designed by Phil Jordan of Falls Church, Virginia, goes on sale
nationwide September 10, 2009. With the 15th stamp in its Legends of Hollywood
series, the U.S. Postal Service honors Gary Cooper (1901–1961), a popular
leading man from Hollywood’s “Golden Age.” For decades, Cooper was the
all-American hero whose believable performances and strong, silent appeal
brought him a lifetime of fame. Phil Jordan designed the stamp using a portrait
by artist Kazuhiko Sano of Mill Valley, California, which was based on a black
and white photograph of Gary Cooper taken by George Hurrell circa 1940. The
selvage art, based on a still from High Noon depicts Gary Cooper in his Academy
Award–winning role as the courageous Marshall Will Kane. First day address:

September 22, 2009, in Washington, DC, the Postal Service will issue a 44-cent,
Justices of the Supreme Court of the United States commemorative stamp in four
designs in a pressure-sensitive (PSA) souvenir sheet of four stamps. The stamp,
designed by Lisa Catalone-Castro and Rodolfo Castro of Bethesda, Maryland, goes
on sale nationwide September 22, 2009. With

Kelp Forest – October 1

On October
1, 2009, in Monterey, California, the Postal Service will issue the 44-cent
Nature of America: Kelp Forest commemorative stamps in ten designs in a
pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) pane of 10 and a $8.95 Premium Stamped Postal
Card Booklet of 10. Designed by Ethel Kessler of Bethesda, Maryland. The stamps
go on sale nationwide October 1, 2009. This 2009 Nature of America issue
features a kelp forest off the central California coast. This is the 11th stamp
pane in an educational series focusing on the beauty and complexity of major
plants and animal communities in the United States. To illustrate the
biodiversity of a kelp forest, artist John D. Dawson of Hilo, Hawaii, depicted
more than 27 different species in his colorful acrylic painting.
