US New Issues

King and Queen of Hearts – May 8

 

On May 8, 2009, in Washington, DC, the Postal Service will issue a 44-cent, Love: King and Queen of Hearts definitive stamp with two different designs in a pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) convertible booklet of 20 stamps. The stamp designed by Derry Noyes, Washington, DC, and Jeanne Greco, New York, New York, goes on sale nationwide May 8, 2009.  Since the beginning of its popular Love stamps in 1973, the U.S. Postal Service® is paying clever tribute to the world’s favorite “game” with the issuance of the King and Queen of Hearts, the latest stamps in the Love series. Artist Jeanne Greco, New York, New York, created the art on her computer for the two stamp designs, one showing the King and one showing the Queen, by using images from 18th Century French playing cards as a reference.  Over the years, the Love stamps have featured a wide variety of designs, including heart motifs, colorful flowers, and the world “LOVE” itself.  First day address:

Seabiscuit Stamped Envelope – May 11

On May 11, 2009, in Kansas City, Missouri, the Postal Service will issue a 44-cent definitive stamped envelope featuring the racehorse Seabiscuit. The envelope goes on sale nationwide May 11, 2009.  John Mattos created the design, which depicts a scene from the exciting race between Seabiscuit and War Admiral. An unassuming champion, Seabiscuit raised the hopes and spirits of a beleaguered nation during the Great Depression with a series of unlikely victories.  The Seabiscuit stamped envelopes will be available in the following formats.

Forever Stamped Envelope – May 11

On May 11, 2009, in Kansas City, Missouri, the Postal Service will issue a 44-cent, Forever definitive personalized stamped envelope. The envelope, designed by Terrence W. McCaffrey, USPS, will go on sale at Stamp Fulfillment Services (SFS) on May 11, 2009.  The following formats will be available to purchase on the first day of issue at SFS. To order from SFS call: 800-STAMP-24 (800-782-6724).  These envelopes are only offered in box sizes of 50 and 500. The prices for boxes of pressure-sensitive adhesive envelopes are as follows:

·         Box of 50 — $31.80

·         Box of 500 — $262.00.

The prices for boxes of water-activated gum envelopes are as follows:

·         Box of 50 — $26.80

·         Box of 500 — $247.00.

Mary Lasker – May 15

On May 15, 2009, in Washington, DC, the Postal Service will issue a 78-cent, Mary Lasker definitive stamp in one design in a pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) pane of 20 stamps. Designed by Ethel Kessler, Bethesda, Maryland, the stamp goes on sale nationwide May 15, 2009.  This stamp, in the Distinguished Americans series, honors Mary Lasker (1900–1994), a philanthropist and citizen activist known for her enduring commitment to increase funding of medical research for major diseases and for her contributions to urban beautification. Created by Mark Summers, Waterdown, Ontario, Canada, the stamp artwork is based on an undated, black and white photograph.  Summers is noted for his scratchboard technique, a style distinguished by a dense network of lines etched with exquisite precision.  First day address:

Bob Hope – May 29

On May 29, 2009, in San Diego, California, the Postal Service will issue a 44-cent Bob Hope commemorative stamp in one design in a pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) pane of 20 stamps. Designed by Derry Noyes, Washington, DC, the stamp goes on sale nationwide May 29, 2009.  The U.S. Postal Service will issue a commemorative stamp honoring Bob Hope (1903–2003), a man who devoted his life to making people laugh. Well-known for his many television appearances, Hope also found success on the live stage, in radio shows, and in motion pictures. He became one of the most honored and beloved performers of the 20th century.  The stamp portrait by artist Kazuhiko Sano, Mill Valley, California, is based on an image of Hope  NBCU Photo Bank. Sano’s previous works for the Postal Service included the Henry Wadsworth Longfellow stamp in the Literary Arts series (2007) and the Frank Sinatra stamp (2008).  First day address:

Anna Julia Cooper – June 11

On June 11, 2009, in Washington, DC, the Postal Service will issue a 44-cent Anna Julia Cooper commemorative stamp in one design in a pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) pane of 20 stamps. The stamp, designed by Ethel Kessler, Bethesda, Maryland, goes on sale nationwide June 11, 2009.  With the 32nd stamp in its Black Heritage series, the U.S. Postal Service honors Anna Julia Cooper, an educator, scholar, feminist, and activist who gave voice to the African-American community during the 19th and 20th centuries, from the end of slavery to the beginning of the Civil Rights movement. The stamp features a portrait of Cooper created by Kadir Nelson, San Diego, California, who based his painting on an undated photograph.  First day address:

Dolphin – June 12

On June 12, 2009, in Washington, DC, the Postal Service will issue a 64-cent Dolphin definitive stamp in one design in a pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) pane of 20 stamps. The stamp, designed by Carl T. Herrman, North Las Vegas, Nevada, goes on sale nationwide June 12, 2009.  This 2009 stamp, with an i llustration by Nancy Stahl, New York, New York, features a bottlenose dolphin leaping from the water. Stahl has created illustrations for several stamps, including the Dragonfly (2008) and Florida Panther (2007), designed in a similar style. She used several photographs of bottlenose dolphins, marine mammals noted for their high intelligence and playful behavior, as reference for the art.  First day address:
