APPALACHIAN WAGON TRAIN

Mail Program
P.O. Box 76, Norvelt, PA 15674

The Appalachian Wagon Train has offered a mail program annually since 1984. The program is free (except postage).  The wagon train receives mail at the beginning of its trek and delivers the mail to the postmaster at the end of the trek for delivery to the address on the envelope.  The program has been very successful.  We have carried mail destined for every state, most provinces of Canada and most European nations as well as countries in South America, Asia and Africa.

2008 Mail Program

The Appalachian Wagon Train has established a General Delivery agreement with the Westover post office to receive mail (letters or parcels) from May 15, 2008 to June 15, 2008 at Westover. You can take advantage of this arrangement to make this a very special day for your father or that special man in your life. Please wait until mid-May to begin sending your mail to avoid over burdening the Westover post office. Don't forget the price to mail a letter goes up to 42 cents on May 12.

If you are unable to participate in the wagon train this year you can also take advantage of this arrangement to send a letter to a friend or relative from the wagon train. Letters carried on the wagon train will be stamped "Carried Onboard" and delivered to the Curwensville postmaster for the wagon train cancellation and then put in the regular mail stream to their final destination.

The Appalachian Wagon Train has applied for the above pictorial cancellation for June 14.  The cancel will be available at Westover, PA and will celebrate the arrival of the wagon train.  The cancel can be obtained as follows:

  1. Send your envelopes/post cards in a larger envelope addressed to: Postmaster, Wagon Train Station, Box 9998, Westover, PA 16692-9998.  This mail will receive the Lilly pictorial cancel and be returned to the regular mail stream. This service will be available until July 12, 2008.  Cancellation requests arriving after June 14 should contain a stamped return envelope.

2003 Mail Program

On Sunday June 15, 2003 an actual retired RFD mail buggy was recommissioned and in harness for the Rockwood post office to deliver the wagon train general delivery mail to the campsite .  The Rockwood post office is to be commended for making a delivery on Sunday evening and on Father's day no less.  The post office certainly fulfilled its commitment "We Deliver".

The mail arrives in a restored RFD buggy Delivery of the mail
