IMPORTANT NOTICE
If you are already aware of the Netscape Certificate expiration and need help installing Netscape Navigator 4.08 or have a problem resulting from the installation of Navigator 4.08, skip the first paragraph.
The security certificates on some versions of Netscape expired on Dec. 31, 1999. Customers using Netscape 4.05 or earlier to access secure sites such as on-line banking or placing orders via the Internet will get a message telling them the certificate has expired and give them an option to continue or cancel. This is a warning message and not a problem with the software. The dialog box will appear each time a customer accesses a secure site. According to the information available from Netscape, by pressing continue, customers will have a secure connection and their credit card number and other personal information will remain as safe and secure as they were before. The Website, however, may deny access.
An upgrade to Netscape 4.08 is available on the Internet Toolkit 4.1 CD you were given at the time you signed up for service. The upgrade is easy to accomplish using the following instructions:
If you have a Toolkit 4.1 CD
- If you are connected to the Internet, please disconnect.
- Before installing Netscape Navigator 4.08, remove any previous versions of Netscape to avoid complications. To do this, double click on My Computer, double click on your hard drive (this is almost always C:\), double click on the Program Files folder, double click on Internet Toolkit, double click on the Netscape folder, right click on the Communicator folder and click delete. Note: Your bookmarks and settings will not be affected, as they will be saved in the User folder.
- After deleting the Communicator folder, close all open windows and proceed with the Netscape Navigator 4.08 installation.
- Insert the Toolkit 4.1 CD. When the screen appears, click on the "Unsupported Extras" icon. A window will appear with choices for the version of Windows you are currently using on your PC. Click either "Windows 3.1" or "Windows 95/NT," and Explorer automatically will launch a screen showing the directory of files on the CD.
Windows 95/NT: Open the Netscape folder, then open "navigator408" and double click on "n32e408.exe" and Netscape Navigator 4.08 will automatically be installed on your computer and the upgrade is complete.
Windows 3.1: Open the Netscape folder and then open the "nav408" folder and double click on "n16e408.exe" and Netscape Navigator 4.08 will automatically be installed on your computer and the upgrade is complete.
If the CD does not automatically open when inserted, you can double click on "My Computer" and double click on the CD drive to access the appropriate files and folders listed above.
If you do not have a Toolkit 4.1 CD
Connect to the Internet in the usual manner. After you have connected to the Internet, open Netscape. Once Netscape has opened, type the following in the "Location" section:
If you are using Windows 95/NT, go here:
http://web.infoave.net/~anonymous/ibmpc/win95/n32e408.exe
If you are using Windows 3.1, go here:
http://web.infoave.net/~anonymous/ibmpc/WIN31/UTILITIES/N16E408.EXE
After clicking on the link, a message will pop up asking if you would like to open this program from its current location or save it to disk. Make sure there is a dot next to Save it to disk and then click OK. It will now ask you where you would like to save the program. You will want to save it into a folder where you know where to find it and click Save. It will now download Netscape Navigator 4.08. The download can take 30 minutes to 3 hours depending on your modem speed. After the download is complete, double click the downloaded file and it will start the installation wizard, which will walk you through the installation of Netscape Navigator 4.08. We strongly suggest that you download the upgrade to your desktop so that it will be easy to find and access.
Frequently Asked Questions
Question: How do I know what version of Netscape I currently have?
Answer: Open your Netscape Browser. Click on Help and then click on About Netscape. This will tell you what browser you are currently running.
Question: How do I save my bookmarks?
Answer: You can save your bookmarks by deleting only the Communicator folder in your current Netscape installation instead of deleting the whole Netscape Folder before installing the Netscape Navigator 4.08.
Question: After I installed Netscape Navigator 4.08, I always get an error message about an AutoAdmin component. How do I fix this?
Answer: This is caused when you install a newer version of Netscape onto a older version. If you get this error message, you must remove both versions of Netscape from Add/Remove Programs and only reinstall Netscape Navigator 4.08. Look under Upgrading to Netscape Navigator 4.08, section B) and C) for directions on how to install Netscape Navigator 4.08.
